Angers is the historical capital and stronghold of the Anjou area, it has many links with Europe which can be found in its history, heritage and economy. The Dukes of Anjou had many connections with European Royal families, as a result, Angers was a very influential city in Europe during the later part of the Middle Ages and throughout the Renaissance. In the Second World War, when Poland was attacked by Germany and Russia in September 1939, Angers was chosen as a base for the Polish government in exile.
A beautiful mosaic can be seen on the facade of the “Maison Bleue” created by the Italian artist Isidore Odorico and also the European Community Plant Variety Office is in Angers.
